Ian Christie

My work at CES concerns social, political and ethical aspects of transitions to sustainable development.

Before joining CES full-time in 2011 I was a visiting prof. and lecturer there for many years, while working as a freelance consultant on sustainability.

Clients included: government departments, local councils, Environment Agency, Natural England, WWF, Church of England and think-tanks. I have held several posts in business and policy.

At Surrey County Council I was joint head of environment, economic development and waste strategy (2003-6); and I was a part-time advisor in the Dept. for Communities and Local Government on climate policy and sustainability (2006-8).

Earlier roles included: fellow of the Policy Studies Institute (1986-95); associate director at the Henley Centre for Forecasting (1995-7); deputy/acting director of the think-tank Demos (1997-9).

My early career was spent in the IT industry as a programmer and technical author.

I’m a trustee of the New Economics Foundation and the charity Global Action Plan; and an associate of the think-tanks Foundation for Democracy and Sustainable Development, Green Alliance, Involve and Theos
