Martha Bicket

Senior Research Fellow (University of Surrey)

Martha Bicket is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Surrey. Martha works at the interface of research and policy, working closely with senior policy-makers and analysts across local, national and international levels of government towards the goal of better-informed decision-making and policy.

Martha is involved in the development and running of CECAN’s case studies – piloting new evaluative methods against real world challenges and changing the way academics and policy-makers co-create knowledge and share expertise: Martha is using systems mapping with Defra to enhance policy evaluation and decision-making capacity to help to navigate change and uncertainty as the UK prepares to leave the EU; she is also working on improving theories of change to address complexity, supporting the FSA’s new programme ‘Regulating Our Future’, through which the FSA is transforming how it regulates the food sector. Martha is also one of the lead authors of a forthcoming specialist supplement for the Magenta Book, the UK Government handbook on evaluation.

Her other research activity focuses on sustainable resource use and the circular economy. Martha is co-author of the 2014 European Commission scoping study on priorities for the circular economy which informed the design of the EU Circular Economy Packages. Previously at Policy Studies Institute, Martha led PSI’s contribution to the €2-million EU Horizon 2020 project MIN-GUIDE, creating the first comprehensive EU policy guide on best practice in sustainable minerals policy.

She holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Warwick and an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London.
