Betheney was awarded a PhD in November 2020 following a viva in which her thesis was approved without corrections. Her doctoral research was a case study of the Marine Pioneer, a UK government pilot testing natural resource governance and management principles from the 25-Year Environment Plan. The aim of the research was to investigate the effects of testing local scale governance alongside the experimental implementation of the Natural Capital Approach in the Marine Pioneer.
