CECAN Fellowship: The Evaluation of Complexity – Exploring Synergies Between Healthcare and the Nexus

Mentors: Emma Uprichard

The main aim of the fellowship will be to make a contribution to the current debate on what constitutes best practice in evaluating complexity via a comparison of evaluation practices and innovation in the areas of the Nexus and health.

Fay is Head of Health Policy Research at NatCen Social Research, Britain’s leading independent social research organisation.  Fay is a highly experienced provider and commissioner of evaluation services, specialising in the design of formative evaluations of complex and heterogeneous interventions, particularly within health services and related areas.

Fay is currently leading the process evaluation component of the national evaluation of  NHS England’s Test Bed programme – a multimillion pound programme introducing combinatorial innovation into the NHS; and a formative evaluation of NHS England’s Sustainable Improvement Team’s interventions to support improvement in general practice as part of the General Practice Development Programme.  Fay joined NatCen from the Health Foundation, where she worked on developing evaluation approaches for the evaluation of the highly complex programmes delivered by the Foundation and its partners.  Fay has led numerous evaluations across the formative and summative spectrum, from within academic, not for profit, and for profit organisations.

Fay is also knowledgeable of quality improvement methodologies, as evidenced by her membership of the Q Community, a network of professionals with expertise in QI run by the Health Foundation and co-funded by NHS Improvement.
